As far as I know, you can bring God into school. If you want, you can pray over your lunch. You can wear a rosary. You can pray for help on your tests.
You can have a religious club or group, and you can pray around the flagpole in the morning. And every single day, we have a minute of silence in the morning, where you can pray to God.

What is not allowed in the schools? Teaching Creationism (that’s what it’s called right?). In schools, the facts of evolution and science are taught rather than the idea of God creating everything. Why should we teach the Christian way of thinking to students who might not be of that belief?

I’m conflicted about her winning.  It’s not that I don’t want her to win, it’s that she’d win for playing a type of role Hattie McDaniel played and got an award for 73 years ago.

73 years have passed and Black Women are still playing maids and jezebels in some shape or form.

But if she wins, I’ll be happy for her because regardless how I feel about The Help, Viola Davis definitely worked her ass off these past years and she’s finally getting the recognition she deserves.

how can you hate the role? the movie was based on a book where the maid was black. unless you want to hire a non black person, but then you can argue about how white people are taking roles from POC. i havent even seen the movie or read the book but im assuming its largely based on the fact that the maids were black and in the south. thats a big part of the story that cant be changed.

Here’s the best answer I can provide, and I am white. So if I am wrong, someone correct me.

The problem is that WoC are ALWAYS cast into the role of the nurturing maid. Always. (Or as whores/sluts to come in and steal men, have lots of promiscuous sex; hence, the jezebel).

So, it’s wonderful that these women are up for Oscars, but they are up because of a role that perpetuates stereotypes. Note how not one single WoC in the movie was empowered and kick ass on her own. She had to have help from the white girl to break out of the mold. All of the WoC were older (with the exception of one of the maid’s daughters; forgive me, I can’t recall her name, but then again the only one I remember is Abeline) and none of them were in a role that was anything besides maid.

The problem with the entire book was that it was based on the concept that the white woman was the one to help and lift up and break mold of racism. Abeline didn’t think of the idea to write the book. She didn’t think to write it herself. The little white girl who went to college and had ridiculous hair did.

The movie also wasn’t set in present day, it was set in the 1960s.

But really, what the upset about it is, is that it perpetuates the idea that WoC aren’t good for anything besides being maids, and can’t be anything else. The book could have been written differently so as to empower the WoC and make them the focus. WoC who do shit for themselves and fight for their rights, rather than WoC who need a white woman to do shit for them and fight for their rights.
